Delegates at the workshop
The workshop drew researchers, specialists and managers, along with representatives of well-regarded companies supplying bitumen, additives and related products - among them Petrolimex Vietnam Bitumen Co., Ltd., Taiyu Vietnam Co., Ltd., Vietnam Carbon JSC and other organisations working in road construction in Vietnam.
At the workshop, specialists and researchers presented the latest work on bitumen and bitumen emulsion, focusing in particular on assessing and improving the properties of bitumen through advanced additives such as Touch Flex R and Tough Fix Hyper from Taiyu Vietnam Co., Ltd., which have been introduced and supplied to several projects in central Vietnam.
A detailed paper on the properties and use of alkaline bitumen emulsion in road construction was also shared, giving a rounded view of where sustainable materials are heading.
One notable highlight was the paper given by Dr. Nguyen Mai Lan - a researcher specialising in bitumen and asphalt concrete, currently based in France. Dr. Lan shared important findings on the properties of bitumen extracted from asphalt pavements in service, and analysed how those properties relate to the remaining life of the asphalt concrete structure. The work opens a new approach to assessing and extending the life of road structures.
The workshop also gave researchers, specialists and managers a chance to exchange views and experience, and from there to propose promising directions for future research. The aim is to develop bitumen with additives and improved bitumen emulsions that not only meet demanding technical requirements but are also kinder to the environment, contributing to a sustainable road network in Vietnam.
With active contributions from industry alongside the research units of the University of Transport and Communications, the workshop underlined how important cooperation between business and researchers is in moving road construction forward.
